Southern Metropolitan Region is a large and diverse electorate, covering much of eastern and southern suburban Melbourne. With 460,000 voters, it is as large as four federal electorates. It elects five members to the Legislative Council — three from the Liberal Party, one from the Australian Labor Party, and one from the Australian Greens.

Southern Metropolitan Region runs from Port Melbourne to Oakleigh and from Kew to Sandringham. It includes some of Melbourne’s wealthiest areas, but also many middle-income and some lower-income areas. It has a wide range of ethnic communities, including large Greek and Jewish communities. It also covers areas where many of Melbourne’s gay and lesbian community lives. It is mostly residential, but includes some manufacturing areas, and several large commercial, retail and entertainment precincts.
